It's hard not to imagine a link between the weakening of the SDF position and the still fresh dissolving of the PKK. I see where freshwater issues can make the pieces fit, but there are likely other causal pathways.
I suppose from the US POV,they waited around with the Kurds and see how stable the new government was. Once it became clear it is there to stay, siding with it became apparent.
